Oregon is an incredibly beautiful state. But its beauty can be overwhelming if you are trying to figure out where to go in Oregon for a trip. This list covers the best places to visit in Oregon to culminate a year of exploring this amazing state. As a side note, this list does not include the more popular places like Multnomah Falls and Cannon Beach as those are probably already on your list. Instead, these places are geared towards the next tier of adventure spots that you may be less familiar with.

How to get to the Best Places to Visit in Oregon

Travel

Likely the easiest way to get to Oregon is to fly into Portland, Oregon (airport code: PDX). However there are other smaller airports if you want to direct your trip towards the center or southern parts of the state. If you plan to stay in the south, fly into Medford, Oregon (airport code: MFR). If you plan to stay in the center of the state, fly into Redmond, Oregon (airport code: RDM).

Unless you are traveling to Portland and planning to stay only in that area, getting a rental car is recommended in order to see the best places in Oregon.

Permits, Passes and Fees

There are three passes that you might encounter/need depending on which places you visit in Oregon. They are as follows:

• Interagency/America the Beautiful Annual Pass – This pass is also known as the “national parks pass” but it offers so much more. It also allows use of many US Forest Service sites, recreation areas, and Bureau of Land Management land. It is currently $80 for 12 months.

• Northwest Forest Pass – This pass is not necessary if you already have the Interagency/America the Beautiful Pass as this pass gets you access to everywhere that the Northwest Forest Pass does. However if you are local and not planning to visit any other federally-managed lands outside of Oregon and Washington, you will save money by purchasing this pass. It is currectly $30 for 12 months.

• Oregon State Parks Pass – For state park areas in Oregon you can purchase an annual pass for $30 or 24 month pass for $50. Here is the link. Daily Oregon State park permits must be purchased on site.

Without much further ado, let’s get to the best places to visit in Oregon.

Ramona Falls

The very first waterfall I hiked to when we moved here. I was able to repeat this hike recently and it was just as stunning as ever. The road to get there has a few potholes but we made it in our van. In the winter the road closes and adds on extra miles. Additionally the river crossing can be very intense. It’s best to do early in the day as more water melts as the day goes on making the river flow faster. Willamette Valley

Oregon’s Willamette Valley is a premier wine destination that is home to two-thirds of the wineries in the state. In fact, over 700 wineries can be found in the region and you will love exploring them all.

So, relax, go on a wine tasting, check out a local hot spring, and enjoy their out-of-this-world pinot noir. Some of the best wineries in the area include White Rose Estate, Domaine Drouhin, and Knudsen Vineyards.

Just know that food options are limited and that you must make reservations well in advance, especially if you will be in the area in the fall or summer. Once you have reservations, you can easily visit two vineyards per day.

Smith Rock State Park

This park reminds me so much of the American Southwest. I can’t believe I’ve only visited one time. That being said it is an amazing spot if you are into climbing or hiking and should certainly be on your list for anytime of the year that you visit Oregon. Silver Falls State Park

Silver Falls State Park is a true American natural wonder and is located just a half-hour drive from Salem, Oregon

It was established in 1933 and is the largest protected area in the state, boasting an incredible fifteen waterfalls that are just waiting to be explored.

To get there, hop on Highway 214 and marvel at the Cascade Range foothills all around you. Also, be sure to visit the 177-foot-tall South Falls.

It’s a photographer’s paradise but North Falls and Winter Falls are also amazing too. So, for the ultimate waterfall experience, hike the Trail of Ten Falls Loop. A hike here will take you through lush forests and canyons filled with cascading waterfalls.

However, you can also enjoy camping while you’re here as well as playgrounds and picnic areas that are perfect for family fun. Plus, there’s a serene swimming area to cool off in on hot summer days.

So, whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a photographer, or someone looking to reconnect with the great outdoors, Silver Falls State Park is one of the best places to visit in Oregon.

Trillium Lake

If you are looking for the best accessible viewpoint of Mt. Hood, this is the spot for you. Not only could I park just about 25 steps from the picture, but that reflection is still one of the best I’ve ever seen. In the winter, the road to the lake closes and there is snowcover. In order to access you would need a Sno-Park pass and either snowshoes or cross country skis.

Columbia River Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge straddles the border between Oregon and Washington. It is a true American gem that is a short 30-mile drive from Portland. Just take Interstate 84 and you’ll quickly arrive at this natural wonder.

Upon arriving at the gorge, you’ll be welcomed by towering cliffs and lush forests that frame the majestic Columbia River.

In fact, with over 90 waterfalls, including the iconic Multnomah Falls, it’s a waterfall lover’s dream which makes it one of the must-see places to visit in Oregon.

However, adventure enthusiasts can hike scenic trails like Eagle Creek and Beacon Rock or try windsurfing on the river here. Birdwatchers and photographers will also find paradise too since there is a diverse array of wildlife in the gorge.

Additionally, history buffs can explore the Historic Columbia River Highway, which is a marvel of American engineering and a national historic landmark.

Tunnel Falls

In my opinion, this is the best waterfall hike in the Columbia River Gorge.  It does take a little more effort to get to, however you do pass at least a dozen waterfalls along the way – at least on a rainy day. This is a popular trail but going on a rainy weekday really cut down on the number of people. It is located in Eagle Creek which had a fire several years ago so the area is still recovering, I only visited after the fire and can confirm it is still beautiful. Wallowa Lake

Wallowa Lake, is an all-American natural wonder nestled in Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains.

To get to Wallowa Lake, you’ll have to take I-84 East to La Grande. Then take OR-82 South to Joseph and you’ll find signs directing you to Wallowa Lake.

Once you get there, you’ll discover an alpine paradise filled with rugged peaks and pristine waters. As a result, fishing, boating, and hiking are major highlights of any visit. However, Wallowa Lake Tramway also offers breathtaking mountain views from the top of Mount Howard.

Wallowa Lake also serves as the gateway to the Eagle Cap Wilderness, an untamed frontier that is ideal for backpacking in summer or skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating in winter.

So, with its diverse array of outdoor activities, Wallowa Lake is the best place to visit in Oregon for those looking to explore true American wilderness.

Tamolitch Blue Pool

A relatively easy hike to this beautiful blue water really can’t be beat. If for some reason you can’t make it to Crater Lake, this would be the next best thing. You can swim in the pool, however it stays around 40 degrees Farenheit all year and can be quite shocking. There are frequently rescues from this area so be very careful if you decide to get in.

Bend

If you are looking for amazing hikes and incredible dining options then Bend is the perfect destination in Oregon for you. This charming city is home to a vibrant culinary scene that includes food carts, breweries, and cider houses.

Bend is also home to numerous natural wonders like Deschutes National Forest with its numerous rivers, mountains, and scenic hikes.

During your stay, you can also explore the Old Mill District, visit Viaggio Wine Bar, check out the Bend Ale Trail, visit the High Desert Museum, or enjoy a concert at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater.

With ample opportunities for outdoor activities like skiing and snowboarding in the winter, hiking in the summer, and rock climbing in the spring and fall, Bend is an exciting destination all year long.

Crater Lake

Crater Lake is certainly one of the best places to visit in Oregon and it is probably one that should already be on your list. Even though it’s hard to access, try to make the time to go anyway. Mount Hood

Located within the mighty Cascade Range, Mount Hood is an incredible volcano that is also a hot spot for outdoor adventure.

Starting from downtown Portland, take I-84 East for 35 miles and use exit 16 to access US-26 East. Continue until you arrive at the base of Mount Hood.

Once here, enjoy activities like skiing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and camping.

You can also explore wildflower-filled meadows and tackle the Timberline Scenic Byway if you’re feeling extra adventurous.

After all, Mount Hood isn’t just a mountain. It’s a hub for outdoor adventure and one of the best places to visit in Oregon.

Umpqua Hot Springs

These hot springs are some of the most beautiful springs that I have ever visited. PLEASE pick up after yourself if you visit. Not sure what it is about hot springs where people suddenly think that a cleaning crew will come behind them. But wow are these massive and beautiful. In the winter, the road closes to access these springs so you will need to hike a bit farther. Most people enjoy these springs nude so it might not be the best place for children.

Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach is one of the most popular spots along the Oregon Coast. It features an almost 4-mile-long shoreline made up of tide pools, sand dunes, and that is home to the 235-foot Haystack Rock.

After taking in the awesome beauty of this stunning beach, go on a quick drive to Oswald West State Park to do a bit of hiking, surfing, and fishing.

Alternatively, extend your stay in Cannon Beach to explore the area’s many art galleries. You can even watch artisans craft glass masterpieces at Icefire Glassworks.

Trail of Ten Waterfalls

Hard to beat ten waterfalls in one trail. This gem in Silver Falls State Park is popular for a good reason and it is my recommendation that if you are in Portland and only have time for one hike, this is the one you should do. God’s Thumb

God’s Thumb is such a cool coastal feature although I had a hard time choosing between this one and several others on the coast so really you can’t go wrong on the Oregon Coast. If you are familiar with this area, note that the trail has recently been changed to more of an inland hike where you pop out to see God’s Thumb only at the end. It is still worth it. Newport

Oregon has many charming coastal towns but Newport is a family favorite along the central coast. After all, this quaint village is home to kid-friendly attractions like the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center, and various local beaches.

Additionally, Newport has plenty of outdoor activities for adults to enjoy, like the beautiful Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area and the picturesque Ocean to Bay Trail.

You will also find the famous Yaquina Bay Bridge nearby which has two observation points with sweeping views of the area. Afterward, head to aquina Bay State Park and visit the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse from 1871.

Natural Bridges

My personal favorite spot in Oregon is located in the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor but also it can be incredibly dangerous if it’s wet. It is one of the best places to visit in Oregon but it is pretty far from Portland. It would be best to access this area from either Medford or Northern California. Brookings

Tucked away along the Southern coast of Oregon, Brookings sits about 6 miles away from the border with California and is home to rugged coastal areas that are perfect for lovers of the great outdoors.

For a beautiful day spent in the outdoors, visit the vibrant tide pools, sandy beaches, and tufted puffins of Harris Beach State Park. During your visit, enjoy epic views of local sea stacks before driving for 12 miles to Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor.

It’s a beautiful place with epic views of the ocean and where you can go to a movie, walk through Azalea Park, or grab a drink ay Chetco Brewing Company.
