While most people might think tropical beaches, coconut drinks, and luaus when they think of Hawaii, there is a whole different side if you are into the outdoors. If you are planning on hiking in Oahu, you are in luck. It is an absolute paradise and hikers dream. This post will review some of the best hikes on Oahu and lead you to some of the most incredible views in the world.
Note: Hiking on Oahu can be dangerous and many of the hikes here have had fatalities. Be sure to be safe while enjoying the outdoors. If you are looking for something a little less challenging, check out this post on the best easy hikes on Oahu.
Best hikes on Oahu
Hiking on Oahu is a bit different than hiking on the mainland. While some hikes listed might seem short, this does not mean they are easy. Make sure to pack the 10 essentials and follow the Leave No Trace Principles when you are exploring in Hawaii. And if you want to know what to do besides hiking while you’re in Hawaii, check out this post to plan the perfect one week Oahu itinerary.
1. Stairway to Heaven
The Stairway to Heaven (also known as the Haiku Stairs) is one of the most infamous views and one of the most well-known hikes in the world, certainly making it one of the best hikes in the area. Unfortunately, over concerns of safety as well as privacy of the neighborhood where the trailhead is located, this hike has been closed for a while with significant (read: $1000) fines. In April 2020, it was decided to transfer ownership of the stairs in an effort to make them eventually legal but this will be at least 18 months.
Luckily, there is a back way to access the Stairway to Heaven. This will allow you to access the Haiku Stairs legally without worrying about a $1000 fine.
The Haiku Stairs can be legally accessed via the Moanalua Trail which is an approximately 10 mile round trip hike. (I don’t have the exact distance as I forgot to charge my Garmin and it died!) This hike has 2,637 ft of elevation gain and has some near vertical, rope and muddy sections. You reach the stairs at the very top. Technically, the act of being on the stairs in any capacity is illegal. As you will find when hiking in Oahu in general, caution is required. This is a steep and sometimes muddy hike that has had injuries and fatalities. For even more details about this hike, check out this blog post.
One unusual tip I discovered for hiking on muddy terrain is to use microspikes. These are designed for hiking in the snow but surprising they also help with hiking in the mud. Importantly, I would recommend the linked Kahtoola brand (pictured below) as some off-brand spikes have a metal bar that goes across the toe box area. This puts significant pressure on your feet when heading downhill unless you are wearing heavy duty boots.
This hike is so amazing that it has its own dedicated blog post. Check out the Stairway to Heaven in Hawaii here.
2. Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail
I’m going to be honest, this was the first ridge trail that we did on our trip to Oahu. This is part of the reason why I feel like this is one of the best hikes on Oahu. But it’s also because they limit the number of people who can access this hike as it’s in a gated community – so it wasn’t crowded at all. In order to get by the guard, you tell them you are there for the hike. Then, the guard will give you a parking pass and write down your license plate.
The Wiliwilinui Ridge trail is 4.5 mile round trip, with 1597 ft elevation gain and it is rated as moderate. This view pictured was not even at the ridge but instead part of the way back down as the sun was setting.
3. Koko Stairs
If you are looking for something a little shorter (but not necessarily easier), then Koko Head Trail might be the hike for you. This is also a good one to do if you are going to miss the Stairway to Heaven as the pictures can look a little similar.
This hike is popular with the locals as a regular workout and features railroad ties. This makes it similar to going up and down steps with large gaps. It is 1.8 miles round trip with 990 ft of elevation gain.
4. Maunawili Falls Trail
If you are disappointed that the first three trails did not mention a waterfall, then consider adding Maunawili Falls to your itinerary. This was a trail we stumbled on by accident as our original plans fell through. However, we were incredibly delighted by this trail so if you plan to hike in Oahu – it’s definitely one for your list!
We loved being able to jump at the waterfall into the water! You could also continue up from where I am in the picture for some more beautiful scenery. This trail was 2.8 miles round trip with 1007 feet of elevation gain and is rated as moderate. It was also incredibly muddy when we visited and it reminded me of hiking in Kauai or the rain forest of Puerto Rico.
For tips on navigating muddy, rainforest-like terrain, check out this post on hiking in the rainforest so that you are prepared.
5. Pali Notches
This is another incredibly short, hard, but amazing hike. Almost the entire way was a scramble. However, you are quick to get to the views. Pali Notches is 0.7 miles round trip with 472 feet of elevation and it should not be attempted unless you are okay with scrambling.
6. Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail
If this list left you somewhat discouraged by the difficulty, don’t worry. Still one of the best hikes in Oahu is rated as easy. The Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail is paved the whole way. It is 2.5 miles round trip and 505 ft of elevation gain. The lighthouse is located on the eastern side of the island so we decided to do this hike for a sunrise.
7. Diamond Head (Le’ahi) Summit Trail
This short, 1.8-mile out-and-back trail is a relatively easy climb that is great for anyone looking for a low-key hike while they’re traveling the area.
After all, this is one of the best hikes on Oahu that features just 452 feet of elevation gain and that offers sweeping views of the area since the path was created in 1908 as part of the island’s coastal defense network.
However, because this is one of the best hiking trails on Oahu that is super popular, try and get here right when they open since the spots at the parking lot fill up fast.
Then, once you’re here you’ll trek along a semi-paved route that takes you past craters and through a tunnel before ascending steps that bring you to the crest of the summit with epic panoramas of Honolulu.
8. Lanikai Pillbox or the Kaiwa Ridge Hike
This moderately difficult hike stretches out over two miles of land and includes a mere 600 feet of elevation gain.
It is also one of the only best hikes in Oahu that derives its name from some World War II bunkers, also known as pillboxes, that sit high on the mountain and look out onto Lanikai Beach.
Now, the majority of hikes do this as an out-and-back climb and turn around at either the second or third pillbox.
However, if you’re more into loop hikes then you could go to Lanikai Beach and enjoy that area too. It’s also a great spot for sunrise and sunset. Just be sure to wear decent shoes since the start of the trail is steep.
9. Waimea Falls
This is one of the best hikes on Oahu that is perfect for the entire family since it’s an easy, 1.9-mile hike with 270 feet of elevation gain.
However, as you walk along this paved road through the Waimea Valley you’ll be treated to sweeping views of Waimea Falls before taking a refreshing dip in the pool below.
Just be sure to bring a change of clothes, a towel, and some water shoes so that you can easily admire this 45-foot-tall waterfall.
It’s also worth noting that you’ll need to pay $20 per adult and $12 per child to get into the Waimea Valley. Thankfully, though there are a ton of fun things to do here like check out the Parker Ranch, Waimea Homestead Farmers’ Market, and the Isaacs Art Center Museum and Gallery.
10. Koko Crater Trail
Probably the most challenging hike on this list of the best hikes on Oahu, the Koko Crater Trail may be short at just 1.6 miles long but includes a climb up more than 1,000 steps.
So, you’ll have to work hard if you want to enjoy the views from the Kokohead Lookout as you make your way along railroad ties that sit as remnants from WWII near the crater here.
There’s also no shade along the route. Therefore, try and arrive early, or in the evening, so that you can avoid the mid-day heat.
Also, be sure to bring a backpack filled with lots of water and plenty of snacks.
11. Likeke Falls
Start your day on one of Oahu’s breeziest hikes and visit Likeke Falls. It will take only 15 minutes to get if you walk at a good pace! Nestled on the island’s windward side, this easy Oahu trail is only around 0.8 miles long roundtrip and features 200 feet of elevation gain.
This trail also takes you past incredible exotic plants and beautiful mountain views. Be on the lookout for Rattlesnake Gingers with their vibrant yellow blooms. While this waterfall may not be the most dazzling, the simplicity of the trek makes it truly one of the best hikes on Oahu.
12. Crouching Lion Trail
Crouching Lion Trail stands out as one of the top hikes on Oahu, offering a short yet exhilarating trek that concludes with a panoramic view of the mountains and the jungle in the northeast With a distance of 0.5 miles roundtrip, and an elevation gain of 300 feet, this short trail can be tackled by novices and advanced hikers alike.
Take time to pause at this scenic hill or continue upward, where the trail seamlessly merges with Pu’u Manamana. This exciting cliff trail is renowned for its thrills.
13. Puʻu O Hulu (Pink Pillbox) Trailhead
Embark on an easy hike along the Maili pink pillbox trail. It is a 1.2-mile roundtrip hike that includes an elevation gain of around 500 feet. It’s also a captivating ridge trail on Oahu’s west side that features a pink-painted bunker on the summit.
Once you make your way to the top, wander inside or climb higher to enjoy stunning views of the Waianae neighborhood in the distance
Additionally, the Maili Point Hike is a less crowded alternative to popular trails like Lanikai Pillboxes, concluding with breathtaking views of nearby highways and beaches. Moreover, this family-friendly Oahu hike boasts a mild set of dirt switchbacks leading to the mountain’s pinnacle, making it accessible for pets and kids alike.
While the mid-day heat presents a challenge, the graffiti-covered pillboxes provide shade with slit windows that allow you to take in the beauty of the coastline with sweeping ocean views of Waianae.
14. Mauna Lahilahi
Uncover the charm of Mauna Lahilahi, a petite rocky peak along Oahu’s Makaha coast. This area is home to picturesque beaches and sits on the west side of Oahu. This hike in Oahu is moderately difficult and is only 0.5 miles roundtrip, with an elevation gain of 200 feet.
So, a swift 15-minute climb takes you straight to the peak. But, be mindful of rock scrambles, which could pose a challenge for less-experienced hikers who have never faced such obstacles. Then, enjoy panoramic views from the summit, enjoying the beauty of the Makaha coastline with Papaoneone Beach and the Hawaiian Princess Resort in the background.
Ideal for anyone seeking a short yet rewarding adventure, Mauna Lahilahi offers a taste of nature and beautiful coastal panoramas that make this a must-explore destination and one of the best hikes on Oahu.

Wow. What great views! I have been to Oahu many times but usually prefer to sit on the beach. I will have to try a hike just for the views.
Haha I totally understand! When I told people I was going to Oahu to hike they were really confused at first since the beach is so amazing!
I am so happy to see the Stairway to Heaven is now accessible! Last time I was in HI, it wasn’t. It has been on my bucket list for some time now… so thanks for this reason to go back to beautiful Hawaii.
Yes! The back way is definitely legal and the Board of Water Supply (who controlled the stairs) just voted a few months ago to work out a permit system to do the stairs from the bottom up within the next 18 months or so. Hopefully it is not delayed by COVID!
I’m not really in to hiking but I might start for these views! Everything looks amazing 🙂
Right?! They seriously can’t be beat!
Oh my gosh, these hikes look incredible! Would love to visit Hawaii one day, the Stairway to Heaven hike is on my bucket list 🙂
It was so so cool! I hope you get to go!
Oh my gosh! The Stairway to Heaven is epic, but I’m not going to do it. Too scary for me. Haha… But seems like I can tackle the Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail. This list is absolutely different from what I have read about best hikes in Oahu.
Wiliwilinui was definitely my second favorite behind seeing the stairs so I would highly recommend it!
Gorgeous!! Love the diversity of all the trails! I need to get back to Hawaii!
You are absolutely right! Most people think Hawaii is all about tropical beaches. All these places you’ve included in this article look stunning. I would love to visit Oahu.

Loved my time in Oahu! Such a beautiful island. Unfortunately, when I was there I was able to do only Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail. But now thanks to your blog post I want to go back so badly and have a huge reason to. And girl that shot on the Stairway to Heaven is epic!
Thank you so much! We did the Lighthouse trail at sunrise and it was stunning!
