There must be a reason why the state has sent more athletes to the Winter Olympics than any other, per capita, in the last decade, right? Use Burlington, VT as your home base for your ski vacation. The airport (BVT) is serviced by major airlines, making it accessible from anywhere in the country. Once you arrive, you may want to rent a car.

While Burlington is the capital, award-winning ski resorts are within a one-hour drive. Stowe Mountain Resort, on the Epic Pass, is home to Vermont’s tallest peak. Sugarbush Resort, on the IKON pass, has the highest chairlift in the state and two peaks to explore. The nearby Mad River Glen is great for those who want a natural ski experience. Only skiing is permitted here, and the terrain follows the natural contour of the mountain on natural snow. This is one of only 3 areas in the United States that still only permits skiing. They also still operate one single chair lift. Don’t worry about riding the lift with a stranger here!

Alyeska is a ski bums paradise with over 62 kilometers of slopes available to ski on. Offering everything from groomed terrain to heli-skiing there is a bit of something for everyone at this resort. The mountain is famous for the large amount of snow it gets, averaging over 650 inches at the top of the lift.

The resort itself is open year round and is considered to be one of the best places to stay in Anchorage. There are several restaurants on site and a brand new nordic spa offering a hot tub and sauna circuit which is perfect to enjoy after a day on the slopes or a full day activity for those that don’t want to ski.

Girdwood itself is a charming town that has many different bars and restaurants to enjoy. Located only 40 minutes from Anchorage, it could be enjoyed as a day trip from the city or you can choose to stay and enjoy the area for a few days. Those that want to travel to Girdwood would fly into Anchorage airport and then either rent a car or take a taxi to the town. Then take Interstate 25 (I-25) north to Santa Fe and follow the signs for US-285 North. Merge onto US-84 West/US-285 North, and after approximately 1.5 to 2 hours of driving, you’ll find yourself in Taos.

So, if you’re looking for a smaller resort (imagine around 30 runs) that offers a more communal experience with incredible views of the lake, then Diamond Peak is your best bet. However, if you wanna do a bit of serious skiing with the locals then enjoy upwards of 480 inches of fresh powder at Sierra-at-Tahoe. Additionally, serious skiers will love Kirkwood Resort since this is one of the best Lake Tahoe ski resorts with over 2,000 feet of vertical drop. 

Other notable ski resorts include the budget-friendly Sugar Bowl, Mount Rose, and Homewood. You also have some beginner-friendly resorts like Northstar Mountain, Heavenly Mountain Resort, Squaw Valley, and Alpine Meadows.

So, it sits at an incredible elevation of 5,236 feet and is home to the Sugar Mountain Ski Resort. In fact, this resort typically has over 78 inches of real powder, covers 125 acres of terrain, is home to over 21 different runs, and has 8 lifts for you and your family to access. 

So, if you’d like to see what one of the best North Carolina ski resorts has to offer, fly into Raleigh Durham International Airport and drive around four hours to Sugar Mountain. Conversely, you would fly into Tri-Cities Regional Airport in Blountville, Tennessee, and then drive around an hour and a half from there. 

Then, upon arrival, grab a Gold Card season pass to enjoy unlimited access to all of North Carolina’s best ski areas, including Appalachian, Beech, Cataloochee, Sapphire Valey, Sugar, and Wolf Ridge.

If you’re looking for one of the best places to go skiing in the US, look no further than Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This town turns into a magical wonderland in the winter and it is the perfect place for your next ski vacation.

You can reach Jackson Hole by flying in directly (airport code: JAC). This airport is unique as it is the only airport in the United States that is located within a national park (Grand Teton National Park). If flying into Jackson Hole is too complicated or expensive, you can also fly into Salt Lake City and make the 4.5 hour drive.

Most people associate skiing at Jackson Hole with Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) – as this is the most popular option. JHMR is on both the Mountain Collective Pass as well as the IKON pass – reservations required. In addition to JHMR, there are two other smaller ski areas as well.

If you aren’t into downhill skiing, there are still plenty of other things to do in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the winter. Jackson Hole’s close proximity to Grand Teton National Park allows for tons of exploration. If you enjoy the outdoors, you can hike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski in the national park or surrounding area.

If you are looking for something a little more adventurous, consider booking a snowmobiling trip. There are many places you can snowmobile to including deeper into the national park on the unplowed roads as well as to local hot springs.

If you’re planning to ski at JHMR, you should certainly stay at Continuum which is at the base of the slopes in Teton Village. This hotel has an outdoor heated pool and jacuzzi which will certainly be a highlight of your stay.

Duluth/North Shore, Minnesota

On the shores of Lake Superior in Minnesota, you’ll find a few of the midwest’s best ski resorts, with some of the most beautiful views. Right in Duluth, Spirit Mountain is a year-round place for adventure in northern Minnesota and is especially great in the winter months.

There are 22 runs that vary in difficulty from easy to advanced, so skiers of all levels can enjoy this epic Minnesota ski resort. Snow tubing is also offered at Spirit Mountain for those visiting who aren’t big skiers, or for some extra fun after the runs close for the night.

Just about 2 hours further north, you’ll find Lutsen Mountains, which is nestled in the Sawtooth Mountains of the North Shore, overlooking Lake Superior. With over 120 inches of snow each year, skiers and snowboarders will have a blast flying down almost 100 runs and through the terrain parks. For those who don’t love downhill skiing, check out the cross-country ski trails or go for a hike along Lake Superior.

Both ski resorts are included in the Indy Pass and are best reached by a flight to either Duluth International Airport or Minneapolis International Airport. On the way back down the North Shore, make a stop for dinner at Betty’s Pies in Two Harbors for dinner and some of Minnesota’s best desserts. And when it’s time to call it a night, book a stay at Lutsen Resort, just minutes from Lutsen Mountains, or Pier B Resort in Duluth.

Mammoth Lakes, California

Mammoth Lakes is located in the Eastern Sierras in northern California, this mountain range offers a stunning backdrop for world class skiing. The town is located 3 hours south of Reno, NV, or 6 hours north of Los Angeles. You can take a regional connecting flight to the Mammoth Yosemite Airport through Advanced Airlines or to Bishop Airport 45 minutes south of Mammoth through United Airlines.

There are two ski resorts in the area, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and June Mountain Ski area with Mammoth Mountain being the larger of the two. June Mountain is known as California’s Family Mountain, providing a family friendly, laid back experience. Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain are both on the Ikon Pass. You can find a place to stay through the Mammoth Lodging Collection, offering a variety of rooms, cabins, condos, and homes depending on your preference.

For non-skiers, the town of Mammoth Lakes provides many dining and shopping opportunities. Even if you don’t want to ski down the mountain, you can pay for a scenic gondola ticket to ascend to Mammoth Mountain Summit for 360 degree mountain views, a photo with the infamous summit sign, and a visit to the cafe. For food and drink, Mammoth Brewing Company is a favorite to grab a beer and a bite after the slopes. To warm up after a day on the mountain, be sure to visit Black Velvet Espresso Bar for a cup of coffee.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City, Utah is a skier’s paradise, with several world-class ski resorts located in very close proximity. Whether you’re looking for powdery slopes or groomed trails, Salt Lake City, Utah has something to offer everyone. With nine different ski resorts an hour or less from Salt Lake City (SLC) International Airport, it is easy to get to both the city itself and the surrounding slopes.

If you have an Epic Pass, you can ski and ride at Park City Mountain Resort. If you have the IKON Pass, you can choose between Snowbasin, Deer Valley Resort, Brighton Resort, Solitude Mountain Resort, Alta Ski Area, and Snowbird Mountain Resort. An important note: Deer Valley and Alta only allow skiing and do not allow snowboarding. Other options that are not on Epic and Ikon include Woodward Park City and Sundance.

There are many things to do in Salt Lake City in the winter, even if skiing and snowboarding are not your thing – snow tubing, winter hiking, hot springs and more. Insider tip: If you are looking for a more touristy experience with the best lodges and restaurant choices, stay near Park City. If you want a more local feel, consider avoiding Park City.

Christmas Mountain, Wisconsin

Big Bear Lake, California

Big Bear Lake is a small unincorporated town in California that draws at least 6 million visitors annually and a good majority of them visit Big Bear over the weekend during the ski season! 

Bear Mountain Ski Resort is a great ski resort that has all kinds of things to do in and around the village besides just skiing and snowboarding making it a great destination for the whole family.

You can dine or drink at one of the several restaurants, go snow tubing, check out the shops, ride the alpine slide, visit the alpine zoo, go bowling, take a helicopter tour, go hiking, or book a luxury stay and enjoy the amenities! 

Getting to Big Bear can be done in several different ways depending on your budget, where you are coming from, and whether you plan to drive or fly. The nearest major cities driving are Los Angeles at 2.5 hours, San Diego at 3 hours, and Las Vegas at 3.5 hours. Keep in mind if you drive in the winter snow chains on your tires may be needed.

If you want to get as close as you can by flying the closest international airports are San Bernardino International Airport (SBD) and Palms Springs International Airport. Otherwise, you’ll need to fly into one of the other major cities I mentioned above and rent a car to drive the rest of the way to Big Bear. 

Pro Tip: If you are looking for a good deal then stay at Lenny’s Lodge. This Airbnb is located right above a highly rated breakfast spot which is very convenient. It’s simple but it has everything you will need and is super close to the hiking trails.

Arapahoe Basin, Colorado

Winter in Colorado is the best time to get outside. The state boasts over 300 days of sunshine and remarkable scenery that provides countless opportunities for outdoors like skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing during winter months.

While ski slopes in places like Breckenridge and Aspen get busy, you can escape the crowds in other destinations. Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin) located near Keystone is one of those places.

What makes A-Basin exceptional is that it boasts an unusually long season: the slopes here close in May and sometimes even June. And with nine lifts and over 1,400 acres of spectacular alpine terrain, this place never feels crowded. You also don’t have to wait for hours to get on a ski lift. 

With its relaxed, hippie vibe, A-Basin stands out among other popular skiing areas in Colorado and many visitors have come to love it just for that. If you are a newbie skier or snowboarder, you might want to know that A-Basin has a good variety of trails suitable for all levels. 

When visiting A-Basin, be aware that traffic can be bad on I-70, especially if you are traveling on weekends. Try to visit on weekday, when it’s less hectic, however, if you are traveling on a weekend, make sure to leave early or late to avoid the afternoon rush hour.
