Bentonville is located in the northwest corner of Arkansas. Arkansas itself is centrally situated in the United States making it the perfect place to visit.

The best way to get to Bentonville is to fly into the Northwest Arkansas Airport in Bentonville, Arkansas (XNA), rent a car, and drive approximately 20 minutes to Bentonville. Alternatively, you can visit Bentonville as part of a complete Arkansas road trip and arrive via Little Rock, Hot Springs, and the Ozarks.

Why You Should Visit Bentonville, Arkansas

If you are not familiar with Bentonville, you are in for a treat. This town will charm its way into your heart very quickly. It has big city amenities with a small-town vibe that is incredibly unique.

Bentonville is well-known for being the home of Walmart, and the significant influence of the Walton family is noted throughout the city. Additionally, Bentonville is the mountain-biking capital of the world. Outside of organized cycling events, you will likely not ever see so many bikes in one place – and put away likely unlocked. However, you don’t have to be an experienced rider in order to fit in with the rest of Bentonville. In fact, the town is very friendly to newbies of the sport.

The thing most surprising about Bentonville is the influence of art throughout the city. There are murals, sculptures, and art installations EVERYWHERE and they are usually woven in with the surrounding nature.

Where Should you Stay in Bentonville

Depending on your preferences, here is where you should stay when you visit Bentonville:

  • Coler Mountain Bike Preserve – This is the best spot if you are planning to van camp or tent camp. You will be 10 minutes away from downtown Bentonville by bike and right in the heart of the trails that Coler has to offer.
  • The Bike Inn – This remodeled motel is both quirky and welcoming with hammocks and an outdoor firepit. It can be booked on Airbnb, but the best price is obtained directly. Check-in is easy with keypads on the doors.
  • Courtyard Bentonville – This hotel is located just outside of downtown and it is a great spot if you prefer chain hotels.

There are an abundance of great things to do near Bentonville, Arkansas. Here is a list to get you started.

Tour The Walmart Museum

The Walmart Museum is an interesting blend of American history, history of the Walton family, and history of the company. It was fascinating to learn about and more enjoyable than you might expect. You can finish your tour of all things Walmart with a stop at the Spark Cafe which has excellent ice cream.

Explore the downtown area

Bentonville has a vibrant downtown area that is filled with incredible shops, amazing restaurants, and cool museums.

So, if you get the chance to visit 21C Museum Hotel, definitely explore this cool part of the city. This is where you’ll find Bentonville Square and Bentonville Provisions, Two Friends Books, and The Preacher’s Son.

The later is a unique restaurant that sits inside an old Gothic Revival church that has been fully restored into a New American restaurant selling a range of high-end dishes that fine diners will love.

Eat at some of the great restaurants

Bentonville might surprise you with how amazing the restaurants are. Fortunately, even the nicest of restaurants are quite accommodating for the casual vibe of the town and you will likely see people still in cycling kits in the restaurants. Just a few of the delicious restaurants are: The Buttered Biscuit, Airship Coffee at Coler, The Momentary and Tower Bar, Louise, HUB Bike Lounge, Tacos & Tamales, and Pressroom.

If you have time you can also stop by 8th Street Market. It’s an enchanting foodhall where visitors can sample amazing food from vendors like Co-Op Ramen and Yeyo’s Mexican.

Afterward, visit iconic local buisnesses like Cocoon Yoga Lab and Bike Rack Brewing Co.

Visit 21c Museum & Hotel

Even if you are not staying at this hotel, it has a lobby and gallery that are worth a stop to take in the art. 21c is also a convenient stop between the Walmart Museum and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

Take a stroll through Compton Gardens

The Compton Gardens are right in the middle of downtown Bentonville although the expansive trees and network of trails will make you think you are in the middle of a vast forest. The gardens surround Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and are a great place to walk, road bike, or mountain bike. There is art along the pathways to experience on your way to the museum.

Enjoy Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

No trip to Bentonville would be complete without a stop at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Even if you have spent the day hiking or biking, the museum takes a “come as you are” approach with no dress code and always free general admission. Everything from the museum grounds to the building to the restaurant, to the exhibits has been completed in a way to really enhance the surroundings. The facility is stunning and it is hard to believe that an art museum this grand could be located in Arkansas.

Visit Osage Park & Lake Bentonville

Stop in at Osage Park and admire Lake Bentonville. There are trails around the lake which are perfect for taking a stroll with the family. There is also a great dog park and pickleball courts.

Try your bow at The Quiver

Located adjacent to Osage Park, spending time at The Quiver is a great way to learn a new skill – archery. A visit to The Quiver should certainly be on your list if you are looking for fun things to do in Bentonville, Arkansas. Even if you have never picked up a bow, the orientation will have you hitting the bullseye in no time.

Also adjacent to Osage Park, Thaden Field is known as the Gateway to the Ozarks. Grab a drink or sit down for a meal at Louise where you can watch the planes take off and land. Or, you can head out yourself on a backcountry tour.

Go Mountain biking at Coler Mountain Bike Preserve

Just ten minutes by bike from downtown Bentonville, Coler Mountain Bike Preserve is a massive network of trails that will make you feel like you are in the remote mountains. The trails at Coler have everything from paved paths and easy mountain bike trails to double black diamond trails with huge jumps. At the central hub is Airship Coffee at Coler which is the perfect spot to take a break in between your rides. If you didn’t bring your bike, the paved trails are great for walking or you could always rent a bike for the day.

Enjoy Some Incredible Public Art

One of the best things to do in Bentonville, Arkansas is to enjoy all of the amazing public art that is on display.

After all, the area features upwards of 130 public art pieces that include everything from metal sculptures to neon signs to vibrant murals.

However, to see as much amazing art as possible, use this public art map to create a personalized itinerary that you and your family will love.

Visit the Museum of Native American History

Although it looks small from the outside, the Museum of Native American History is also worth a stop to learn more about America’s first inhabitants. The museum covers thousands of years and is broken into five distinct time periods.

Take a cool day trip

Due to Bentonville’s amazing location, there are lots of cool places to explore in the surrounding area. You could head to Fayetteville since this vibrant college town sits at the base of the Ozarks and is home to the University of Arkansas.

Additionally, The Razorback Greenway is located in Fayetteville and is home to 40 miles of trails that connect the town to Bentonville. Explore this paved trail at your leisure and stop at a nice restaurant along the way.

Alternatively, try visiting Eureka Springs. It’s a fun and funky town that is just an hour away from Bentonville. It is home to an eclectic mix of shops, caves, and buildings that are well worth seeing.

See Armadillos at Devil’s Den State Park

Less than an hour away from Bentonville, Devil’s Den State Park is a great place to go for a hike. The Yellow Rock Trail is 3.1 miles round trip, 551 feet of elevation gain, and it is rated moderate. While hiking, keep your eyes peeled for armadillos. Remember, armadillos are wildlife and you are visiting their home. Do not approach, agitate, touch, or feed the armadillos. Don’t forget to pack the hiking essentials including headlamp, layers, water, and snacks. Devil’s Den State Park is a perfect stop if you are heading to Bentonville from Little Rock or Hot Springs as it is not too long of a detour.

Marvel at Modern Art at The Momentary

Known for being the sister facility of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, The Momentary sits inside a historic cheese factory that was expertly transformed into a beautiful cultural center.

Therefore, visitors today can stop by and enjoy a wonderful museum dedicated to visual, performance, and culinary arts.

After all, this facility is brimming over with performance art shows, concerts, pottery classes, and contemporary art exhibits that everyone will enjoy.

Just don’t leave without sampling local culinary delights at the Onyx Coffee Lab, The Tower Bar, The RØDE Bar, and The Momentary Food Truck.

Hike in the Ozarks and Buffalo National River

There is a good reason why Arkansas is called “The Natural State” and you will likely discover it if you drive about two hours east of Bentonville to the heart of the Ozarks. Two great hiking choices are Whitaker Point/Hawksbill Crag and Big Bluff. Whitaker Point is one of the more recognizable Arkansas viewpoints and it is absolutely stunning. It is a perfect place to watch the sunrise. The gravel road to access the trail head is quite steep, however it is likely accessible to most vehicles. The trail is 2.9 miles round-trip, has 413 feet of elevation gain, and is rated moderate.

The Centerpoint to Goat Trail leads to Big Bluff, a beautiful overlook of the Buffalo National River, and truly helps you understand why Arkansas is referred to as The Natural State. Popular among hikers and backpackers alike, this trail is perfect for sunset. The Centerpoint to Goat Trail is 5.9 miles round-trip, has 1076 feet of elevation gain, and is rated as hard. Regardless of where you hike, make sure that you pack layers, a flashlight, water and snacks.
