Thinking about visiting Puerto Rico? Undoubtedly, one of the biggest questions on your mind is likely “has Puerto Rico recovered from the hurricane?” as was mine before I visited in December 2019. The whole idea of answering has Puerto Rico recovered from the hurricane is a loaded question.
Where we stayed in Condado Beach, San Juan, Puerto Rico, you likely would say “what hurricane?!”. There is virtually no evidence of Hurricane Maria in the touristy areas in San Juan and Old San Juan.
Outside of San Juan…
However, venture out just a little bit, and you will find that the answer to “has Puerto Rico recovered from the hurricane?” suddenly becomes very different. On our way to the bioluminescent bay, our guide pointed out several billboards that were blown over and laying on houses, many roofs that were torn off, and several light poles that were missing the lights. You will likely see similar things when heading to the rainforest.
Our guide also mentioned several interesting facts. Such as that locals were given a year to wait and pay their mortgages as a result of the hurricane. However, during this time off from paying their mortgage, they had to pay the full year upon the conclusion of the break. This would be difficult for many causing those that didn’t lose their homes in the actual hurricane to lose them later.
If you are considering visiting Puerto Rico, you definitely should still visit. Tourism is a large part of the economy and your visit will help provide jobs as well as an overall economy boost. If you are planning to stick to the most touristy areas of San Juan and Old San Juan, the answer to “has Puerto Rico recovered from the hurricane?” is a resounding yes. However, venture out, and you will discover that this answer becomes very different.
