When I started traveling for work a few years ago, I gained 10 pounds in the first 6 months. I was buying treats in the airport, falling behind on my workouts, and eating poorly when I got back home. But I reversed courses and have since lost those 10 pounds, completed multiple half Ironmans, and have my at-home eating dialed in. In this post, I will discuss how to eat healthy while traveling. However, wellness is not just about eating. Check out this post for tips on how to stay healthy while traveling.

How to eat healthy while in the airport
Traveling is an excuse to try cool new cuisines, but the airport doesn’t count. While Auntie Anne’s may smell good, it is not exactly a “new cuisine” and even allowing yourself 1 airport treat can add on the pounds when you are traveling multiple times per week or month. Instead focus on healthy foods in the airport. Either bring your own snacks or find salads and fruit. In addition, opt for water by bringing your own bottle and filling it once you get through security. This is low calorie AND low budget. While not the only important step, learning how to eat healthy while traveling in the airport is a critical piece.
How to eat healthy at your destination
While of course you want to try new and unique foods, every meal that you have doesn’t have to be super high calorie. If you want to focus on how to eat healthy while traveling, make sure you check nutritional facts on the menu. Not always will the salad be the lowest calorie option. And if you are traveling with another person, splitting an entree could be the way to try something delicious with half the calories.
Travel with workout clothes
Although this doesn’t fall under the category of eating healthy while traveling, fitness is part of your overall health. I found that for me it’s actually easier to get a workout in when I am traveling for work because I have more solo downtime and it’s not taking away family time like it would be when I am home. When I travel for fun, usually whoever I am with wants to workout as well. The hotel will likely have a gym or give you access to a nearby facility. However, you can also considering finding a local gym or studio. I have done hot yoga on the road while traveling and I love doing that.
Eating healthy when you’re back at home
One important piece when you are traveling is eating healthy when you get back home as well. Often it may be a little more difficult to get to the grocery store between trips. I combat this by using Hello Fresh. Hello Fresh is similar to Blue Apron but much better in my opinion. The perk of using Hello Fresh is that a lot of grocery shopping is taken care of for you. And the meals are pretty healthy. You can adjust the dates your meals are delivered and skip weeks if you need to. If you are looking to try Hello Fresh for a discount check out this link!
