When I told people I was going to Puerto Rico, everyone said “Go to El Yunque!” . And the rainforest was absolutely as amazing as I hoped it would be! For those of you who have never hiked in the rainforest, here is my guide on how to hike in the rainforest.
Rainforest hiking tips:
1- You will get muddy. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Darker clothes tend to work better than lighter as it won’t matter as much if you can’t get the last bit of dirt out. (My first trip to a rainforest was while wearing neon yellow shorts-lesson learned the hard way).
Pro tip: Headed to El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico? While there is Uber available in Puerto Rico, you will need to rent a car.
2- When thinking about how to hike in the rainforest, one of the most important things to think about is your footwear. While you probably won’t have much grip on your shoes regardless in thick mud, consider grabbing some hiking sandals. I’ve been using my trusty Keen adventure sandals for so long you can’t quite tell their original color, but they are great!
3- Stay weather flexible. While I am normally not the biggest fan of hiking in the rain, it’s a rainforest, so not surprisingly this happens. Fortunately the weather changes quickly so if you stick it out, you’re likely to get lucky.
4- The humidity from the rainforest can make you sweat so replenishing with water and electrolytes is as critical as ever.
5- Rainforests can also get buggy. Consider insect repellant if you are prone to bites.
Hopefully these tips have prepared you for how to hike in the rainforest. Have you ever been to a rainforest?
