Last week, we discussed the difference between TSA PreCheck and Global Entry. Since these both cost money, this got the discussion going as to whether or not there were any free alternatives. In today’s Wanderlust Wednesday post, we will compare Mobile Passport vs Global Entry.
Global Entry
So what does Global Entry get you? It provides the TSA PreCheck benefit plus expedited US customs screening for international air travelers when entering the United States. Global Entry costs $100 for a five year membership. If you are interested in Global Entry, you must apply through the Trusted Traveler Program website. Signing up for Global entry requires an application and a visit to an in-person enrollment center. However, sometimes there will be enrollment fairs more locally so check for those as well.
Mobile Passport
If you have limited time before your trip, your decision between Mobile Passport vs Global Entry will likely be made for you. Getting Global Entry takes time, Mobile Passport is simply a mobile app that you download.
The Mobile Passport app enables travelers entering the United States to submit their passport information and customs declaration form via the app and go through the inspections process using an expedited lane. This app is free to use, however if you want to store your information in the app so you do not have to re-enter it each time, the cost is currently $14.99 per year.
Why not both?
There may be a scenario where the answer to Mobile Passport vs Global Entry is actually both. As more and more credit cards offer Global Entry as a perk, you may find that the lines for Global Entry may get a little longer. In that case, it would be nice to have Mobile Passport as a backup.
