Top Instagrammable Spots in Old San Juan

When I arrived in Old San Juan I started wandering around. Almost everywhere was perfect for a photo opportunity.

1. La Fortaleza Street

La Fortaleza street which is the street that normally has the umbrellas, but when I was visiting they replaced the umbrellas with a big flag.

When looking online for picture spots ahead of my trip, the most popular one was actually the one with umbrellas. But, when I visited Old San Juan, they removed the umbrellas and put up the giant flag instead.

If you want to know what will be there in advance of your trip, it will likely show up on TripAdvisor under the reviews.

Anyway, this street is easily the most iconic photography spot in Old San Juan, and it’s easy to see why.

This enchanting street leads straight through to Puerto Rico’s Governor Mansion (La Fortaleza), which is closed to vehicles. So, you can easily capture beautiful shots without any cars in the background.

The decorations on this street also change periodically. So, you might find vibrant umbrellas overhead instead of the Puerto Rican flag proudly displayed during my visit.

If you can, stop by early in the morning. This will allow you to avoid large groups of people and to get the best photos possible.

Everywhere you turn in Old San Juan you’ll find beautiful Colonial-style buildings painted in a dazzling array of vibrant colors.

However, one of the best places to find these amazing buildings is Calle Norzagaray. Stop by and I dare you not to take a photo or two.

Afterward, stop by Hotel El Convento. It’s a beautiful luxury hotel where you can take photos with the building’s grand exterior in the background.

There’s also a really charming street right next to Hotel El Convento where you’ll want to stop to take tons of photos. You’ll find quaint stone pathways, vibrant buildings, stunning potted plants, and cute little benches that are perfect for a mini photo shoot.

3. Puerto Rican Flag Door

This old Puerto Rican flag door uses black and white to replace the red and blue colors of the Puerto Rican flag. It is a great place to take photos since it is a unique combination of old and new.

In fact, you can see the building in ruins in the background with vintage depictions of Puerto Rican locals standing along the side of the building on either side of the door.

It is easily one of the most Instagrammable places in Old San Juan since you can capture a beautiful photo with the door and the people painted on the side of the building.

4. Calle Imperial

Calle Imperial is one of the most photogenic streets in Old San Juan. Stop by during your trip and you’ll be able to take beautiful photos on cobblestone streets lined with colorful buildings.

But the real highlight of any stop here is a photo in front of a gorgeous door painted to represent the Puerto Rican flag. So, visit early in the day and enjoy all the Purto Rican pride that surrounds you.

5. Castillo San Felipe del Morro El Morro Fort

Easily one of the most iconic photo spots in San Juan, Castillo San Felipe del Morro/El Morro Fort was first built in 1539 by Spanish conquistadors. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a great place to visit if you love history and enjoy great photos.

Stop by to learn about the history of the structure and understand its key defensive position in the new world. It’s also a great place to enjoy stunning views of the nearby city.

I visited these spots at around 8 am on a Thursday morning. If you go later in the day or arrive on a cruise, they may not be as secluded. I was also by myself for this portion of my trip. I use a tripod similar to this one (~$10) to take my pictures.
