However there are other smaller airports if you want to direct your trip towards the center or southern parts of the state. If you plan to stay in the south, fly into Medford, Oregon (airport code: MFR). If you plan to stay in the center of the state, fly into Redmond, Oregon (airport code: RDM).</p> <p>Unless you are traveling to Portland and planning to stay only in that area, getting a rental car is recommended in order to see the best places in Oregon.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-permits-passes-and-fees">Permits, Passes and Fees</h3> <p>There are three passes that you might encounter/need depending on which places you visit in Oregon. They are as follows:</p> <ul> <li>Interagency/America the Beautiful Annual Pass – This pass is also known as the “national parks pass” but it offers so much more. It also allows use of many US Forest Service sites, recreation areas, and Bureau of Land Management land. It is currently $80 for 12 months.</li> </ul> <ul> <li>Northwest Forest Pass – This pass is not necessary if you already have the Interagency/America the Beautiful Pass as this pass gets you access to everywhere that the Northwest Forest Pass does. However if you are local and not planning to visit any other federally-managed lands outside of Oregon and Washington, you will save money by purchasing this pass. I was able to repeat this hike recently and it was just as stunning as ever. The road to get there has a few potholes but we made it in our van. In the winter the road closes and adds on extra miles. Additionally the river crossing can be very intense. It’s best to do early in the day as more water melts as the day goes on making the river flow faster. In fact, over 700 wineries can be found in the region and you will love exploring them all. </p> <p>So, relax, go on a wine tasting, check out a local hot spring, and enjoy their out-of-this-world pinot noir. Some of the best wineries in the area include White Rose Estate, Domaine Drouhin, and Knudsen Vineyards. </p> <p>Just know that food options are limited and that you must make reservations well in advance, especially if you will be in the area in the fall or summer. Also, be sure to visit the 177-foot-tall South Falls.</p> <p>It’s a photographer’s paradise but North Falls and Winter Falls are also amazing too. So, for the ultimate waterfall experience, hike the Trail of Ten Falls Loop. A hike here will take you through lush forests and canyons filled with cascading waterfalls.</p> <p>However, you can also enjoy camping while you’re here as well as playgrounds and picnic areas that are perfect for family fun. Hood, this is the spot for you. Not only could I park just about 25 steps from the picture, but that reflection is still one of the best I’ve ever seen. In the winter, the road to the lake closes and there is snowcover. In order to access you would need a Sno-Park pass and either snowshoes or cross country skis.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-columbia-river-gorge">Columbia River Gorge</h3> <p>The Columbia River Gorge straddles the border between Oregon and Washington. It is a true American gem that is a short 30-mile drive from Portland. Just take Interstate 84 and you’ll quickly arrive at this natural wonder.</p> <p>Upon arriving at the gorge, you’ll be welcomed by towering cliffs and lush forests that frame the majestic Columbia River.</p> <p>In fact, with over 90 waterfalls, including the iconic Multnomah Falls, it’s a waterfall lover’s dream which makes it one of the must-see places to visit in Oregon.</p> <p>However, adventure enthusiasts can hike scenic trails like Eagle Creek and Beacon Rock or try windsurfing on the river here. It does take a little more effort to get to, however you do pass at least a dozen waterfalls along the way – at least on a rainy day. This is a popular trail but going on a rainy weekday really cut down on the number of people. It is located in Eagle Creek which had a fire several years ago so the area is still recovering, I only visited after the fire and can confirm it is still beautiful. Then take OR-82 South to Joseph and you’ll find signs directing you to Wallowa Lake.</p> <p>Once you get there, you’ll discover an alpine paradise filled with rugged peaks and pristine waters. As a result, fishing, boating, and hiking are major highlights of any visit. If for some reason you can’t make it to Crater Lake, this would be the next best thing. You can swim in the pool, however it stays around 40 degrees Farenheit all year and can be quite shocking. There are frequently rescues from this area so be very careful if you decide to get in.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bend">Bend</h3> <p>If you are looking for amazing hikes and incredible dining options then Bend is the perfect destination in Oregon for you. Continue until you arrive at the base of Mount Hood.</p> <p>Once here, enjoy activities like skiing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and camping.</p> <p>You can also explore wildflower-filled meadows and tackle the Timberline Scenic Byway if you’re feeling extra adventurous.</p> <p>After all, Mount Hood isn’t just a mountain. PLEASE pick up after yourself if you visit. Not sure what it is about hot springs where people suddenly think that a cleaning crew will come behind them. But wow are these massive and beautiful. In the winter, the road closes to access these springs so you will need to hike a bit farther. Most people enjoy these springs nude so it might not be the best place for children.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cannon-beach">Cannon Beach</h3> <p>Cannon Beach is one of the most popular spots along the Oregon Coast. It features an almost 4-mile-long shoreline made up of tide pools, sand dunes, and that is home to the 235-foot Haystack Rock. </p> <p>After taking in the awesome beauty of this stunning beach, go on a quick drive to Oswald West State Park to do a bit of hiking, surfing, and fishing. </p> <p>Alternatively, extend your stay in Cannon Beach to explore the area’s many art galleries. If you are familiar with this area, note that the trail has recently been changed to more of an inland hike where you pop out to see God’s Thumb only at the end. It is still worth it. Check out this post for even more of the <a href="https://beautahfulworld.com/best-spots-on-the-oregon-coast-must-see-places/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">best spots on the Oregon Coast</a>.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-newport">Newport</h3> <p>Oregon has many charming coastal towns but Newport is a family favorite along the central coast. After all, this quaint village is home to kid-friendly attractions like the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center, and various local beaches. </p> <p>Additionally, Newport has plenty of outdoor activities for adults to enjoy, like the beautiful Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area and the picturesque Ocean to Bay Trail.</p> <p>You will also find the famous Yaquina Bay Bridge nearby which has two observation points with sweeping views of the area. It is one of the best places to visit in Oregon but it is pretty far from Portland. It would be best to access this area from either Medford or Northern California. During your visit, enjoy epic views of local sea stacks before driving for 12 miles to Samuel H.
