When visiting Puerto Rico, the number one thing you cannot miss (in my opinion) is El Yunque rainforest. I even heard this from many people prior to actually going to Puerto Rico itself. “You have to go to El Yunque”. Ok ok we get it. Now I’m sure you’re wondering what to do in El Yunque National Forest once you actually get there.

How to get to El Yunque

First things first, while Uber operates in the greater San Juan area, this is not an option for transportation to the rainforest. You will need to either join an excursion or rent a car (recommended). Additionally, I am a fan of visiting when there are less people. We went on a Friday morning and left our hotel in San Juan around 8am. This allowed us to arrive in the rainforest a little after 9am with a quick pit stop.

To hike or to explore from the car

Depending on your level of hiking interest, there are many options. However even if you don’t want to hike, there are still beautiful waterfalls you can see from the road without getting out of the car. La Coca Falls was one example of a beautiful waterfall that was visible from the road.

Our original plan was to hike La Mina falls but the access road was closed. Instead we decided to hike to Juan Diego Falls. Overall, this was a shorter option but it still gave us the rainforest waterfall feeling that we were hoping for and it made this the highlight of the trip. If you are looking for what to do in El Yunque National Forest, this would be my recommendation.

Once you get to the base of the falls, if you are adventurous, you can consider hiking higher to the top. If this is your first-time hiking in a rainforest, check out these tips here. The treacherous and muddy path was off to the right. We did this early enough that we had the higher portion of the waterfall all to ourselves.

Go Horseback Riding

Yokahua Tower

If you haven’t had the chance to enjoy all of the best things to do in El Yunque National Forest, consider visiting Yokahua Tower. It is located near El Yunque National Forest’s entrance and is a convenient, family-friendly destination.

Take advantage of ample parking and enjoy a short climb to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the rainforest and Luquillo Beach.

Therefore, this place is a must-visit for those seeking a quick but rewarding experience.

El Portal de El Yunque Visitor Center

El Portal de El Yunque Visitor Center serves as the gateway to the El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico and is located amidst lush tropical foliage.

Now, after undergoing extensive reconstruction due to hurricane damage, the El Portal Visitor’s Center proudly reopened its doors in January 2022.

The modernized setting exemplifies both beauty and sustainability with its architecture. Educational exhibits are also spread across the first and second floors, both of which can be explored in under an hour.

Just don’t miss the Puerto Rican parrots since they are part of a critical reintroduction initiative due to their endangered status.

Moreover, visiting the center requires a payment of around $8.00 per adult, while kids under 15 can enter for free.

Lastly, don’t forget to get the National Park Pass because pass holders can receive a 50% discount.

Juan Diego Falls

This waterfall is one of the prettiest and most easily accessible in the park. Just follow a sign beside the road to a small parking area near kilometer 9.6. Park your car and wear hiking boots since the trails can get pretty muddy.

Once on the trail, enjoy a quick hike to this beautiful waterfall. Admire the tropical plants all around you and enjoy stunning views of the waterfall. If you want you can even go for a swim. But, remember that the water will feel a bit cold.

If you want, use a small path on the right to access a second waterfall from Juan Diego Falls. This waterfall is actually bigger than the first and isn’t as packed with people since the trail to the waterfall is filled with tree roots and logs.

Mt. Britton Tower

Easily one of the most popular hikes in the park, the trek to Mt. Britton Tower is well worth your time since you’ll see a beautiful, orange-hued, stone tower quietly sitting in the jungle. If you want, you can even climb the stairs inside to enjoy beautiful views of Puerto Rico at the top.

The easiest way to access this tower, and trail, is to drive to the end of the main road in El Yunque. Once there, you can park your car and hike along a 0.8-mile-long trail (one way) to the base of the tower.

The hike isn’t long but includes a bit of elevation gain. So, expect the hike to take anywhere between 30 and 40 minutes. It’s nice because the trail is paved and you can listen to local frogs croaking in the background. You’ll also want to veer right right when you hit a paved road. However, there are plenty of signs around so you shouldn’t get too lost.

Bano Grande

After hiking to Mt. Britton Tower be sure to visit Bano Grande. It’s located right next door and is this beautiful, old-world pool that was constructed by locals who wanted to harness the power of the forest’s many rivers.

To visit, look for the pool around kilometer 11.9. Just park in the associated lot and take a quick walk there. Sadly, you cannot swim here, but you can admire this beautiful piece of history and enjoy the peace of the forest all around you.

The time you spend there can vary greatly based on your interests, ranging from as little as an hour to a full day. But, plan to spend at least 4 hours in the forest for an incredible journey.

There are plenty of things to see and do in El Yunque like exploring waterfalls and enjoying hiking adventures.

You can also embark on a hike along the La Coca trail and continue down to a series of tranquil ponds where you can go for a refreshing swim.

Before visiting El Yunque National Forest, it’s important to be prepared to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. So, here are some of the things you need to know before you visit.

• Weather: The weather in El Yunque can change rapidly. So, be prepared for rain and pack waterproof clothing, sturdy footwear, and insect repellent.

• Trail Difficulty: Trails in El Yunque vary in difficulty. So, choose one that suits your fitness level and hiking experience.

• Permits: Some trails and activities may require permits. So, check in advance and obtain any necessary permits.

• Parking: Parking spaces can be limited, especially during peak hours.

• Cell Phone Reception: Cell phone reception in the forest can be unreliable. So, inform someone of your plans and expected return time before heading out on a hike.

• Check for Closures: Occasionally, trails or areas are closed due to maintenance, weather, or other factors.

• Safety: Follow safety guidelines, especially when swimming in rivers or near waterfalls. Be cautious of slippery surfaces and fast-flowing water.

How Long Does it Take to Walk El Yunque?

The time it takes to walk El Yunque National Forest depends on the specific trail chosen.

Shorter hikes, like the La Mina Falls trail, can be completed in 30 minutes or an hour, while longer, more challenging hikes can take several hours or a full day.

Additional options for what to do in El Yunque National Forest would be to hike to the tower. Keep in mind that this is a rainforest so the views will likely be hit or miss, however I am sure they would be spectacular if you had a break in the clouds. Another option would be to enjoy the natural rock waterslide of Las Paylas. Full disclaimer, I did not do either of those options but I wanted you to know that they are there.
