If you’re in or around Salt Lake City or Park City, there is another destination not too far away with some unique attractions – Midway, Utah. We visited Midway over the long weekend in January as it was right before Austin’s big surgery test so it was nice to have a staycation only 45 minutes from home. So if you’re wondering what to do in Midway, Utah this post is for you!
While the opportunities are different throughout the year, we went during the winter so I will discuss this season specifically.
What to do in Midway Utah
Hotel: Homestead Crater Resort
We stayed in the Homestead Crater Resort which was right in the middle of the action. We stayed in one of the cottages as this was the option that was pet friendly. They felt like a cross between an Airbnb and a hotel. Very adorable.
This hotel was walkable (3-5 minutes) to both the Ice Castle and the Crater making the location perfect for us. It is also located right on the golf course if you are looking to do that in the summertime.
Food: Midway Mercantile
After debating whether or not we should eat at home before leaving, we decided to look up restaurants in the area and discovered Midway Mercantile. The menu looked excellent and upon visiting we were not disappointed.
Midway Mercantile definitely feels like a restaurant that would be situated in a larger city. This is an unusual feeling for the small towns of Utah. We enjoyed our dinner so much that we returned for brunch on Sunday!
Activities: Ice Castle
When looking into what to do in Midway Utah, the first thing you probably came across if you’re looking in the winter was the Ice Castle. I learned about the Midway Ice Castle the first year I moved to Salt Lake City but it was one of those things that was so close so it was hard for us to make time.
Definitely recommend checking out the ice castle. We went at night so the ice was lit up with so many pretty colors.
Here are some tips for visiting the Midway Ice Castle:
- Book tickets online in advance. The Ice Castle sells out spots during popular times and it would be a bummer to get all the way there and not get to visit. Book online in advance.
- Like so many things in Utah, the Ice Castle is closed on Sundays. Plan on visiting on an alternate day.
- Prepare to be cold. Midway is a lot colder than Park City and Salt Lake City. The Ice Castle is outside and it’s made of ice. You will be walking around the ice and in snow. Layer up.
- Wear snow boots. I have these. Austin had on high top boots and the snow was over his boots in a few places. DEFINITELY do not wear sneakers. Those people who did looked quite uncomfortable.
I definitely want to go back to the Ice Castle during the day. It might be a good idea to do on two different days of your visit at two different times.
Activities: Crater
The other popular thing when discovering what to do in Midway Utah is to visit the Homestead Crater. According to the website: Midway is home to Utah’s ONLY geothermal hot spring. Housed in a beehive-shaped limestone rock on the Homestead property, The Crater provides 55 feet of depth for swimmers, scuba divers, and snorkelers of all walks of life.
Here are some tips for visiting Homestead Crater:
- The ONLY way to visit it with a reservation. Get one by calling 435-657-3840.
- Although the crater is deep, you do not have to be able to swim as life jackets are provided and required to be worn.
- It was so steamy due to the outdoor temps (in the teens) that you couldn’t see much. Was still really cool, but just something to note. Makes me want to come back in a different season.
