While I know that I normally write about travel, the outdoors, and a sprinkle of gratitude here and there, one of my 2020 goals was to read one book and listen to one audiobook each month. Then, I wanted to write a blog post about each of them. The reason why I wanted to include it in my blog is because with traveling there can be a significant amount of downtime. If you are taking a road trip, there are hours in the car that can be spent listening to audiobooks. If you’re on a plane or waiting in the airport, you can add in physical books. So hopefully you will consider reading and listening along with me. My first review comes from one of my favorite books. Here is my “You are a Badass” review.

You are a Badass Review

You are a Badass by Jen Sincero is a book that I have read and listened to several times. However, since it has been about a year, I decided to make it my first audio choice for 2020. In total, I listened to it 5 times in January.

A word of caution: Although you probably gathered this from the title of the book, I wanted to make sure it was noted that “badass” is not the only bad word used in this book. If you are unable to look past the language, this book is probably not for you.

You are a Badass Review – Background

In her book, Jen Sincero first provides the background as to how we are the way we are. She differentiates from the subconscious mind and conscious mind. “Our subconscious mind contains the blueprint for our lives. It’s running the show based on the unfiltered information it gathered when we were kids, otherwise known as our “beliefs”.” This helps set the stage for the understanding that while you may consciously want to lose weight, travel more, or become wealthier, your subconscious mind might be sabotaging you. In the examples above you could be equating food with comfort, travel with scary or irresponsibility, and money with “evil”.

Understanding frequency and Law of Attraction is also part of the background in the book. “All energy vibrates at a certain frequency. Which means you’re vibrating at a certain frequency, and everything you desire, and don’t desire, is also vibrating at a certain frequency. Vibration attracts like vibration.” She goes on to liken this to a radio channel and getting ready for a date. If you are trying to get in the vibe for a sexy date but you turn on NPR instead of your favorite Barry White/90s hip hop channel (pick your age here – ha!), you won’t be attracting a mood ready for love.

You are a Badass Review – Embracing Yourself

The next section of the book helps you learn more about yourself and embrace what you discover. One of the things that has been the hardest for me to grasp since reading this book several years ago is also something that is the most important. “Do not waste your precious time giving one single crap about what anybody else thinks of you.” and later “We throw a wet blanket of ho-hummery over our lives when we live in fear of what others might think, instead of in celebration of who we are.

Doing what everyone else is doing and staying “comfortable” likely won’t get you to the life you want. So if this is the case, people are going to judge as you start to go against what is “normal”. If you can embrace the mantra of not caring what anyone else thinks, you will catapult in the right direction.

You are a Badass audio
While I have read the book several times, this time I listened to the audio version. You can find that here.

You are a Badass Review – Tapping into a Higher Power

If you have been following me for a while, you know that I am really into gratitude. I talk about how gratitude can change your life here. However, I have been writing about gratitude since 2016 and you can see my first post about it here. Fun fact – I started this blog in 2016 so I’ve been writing about it since the beginning.

Jen has a whole chapter in her book called “Gratitude – the Gateway Drug to Awesomeness”. So yeah, love. In this chapter, one of my favorite parts is “The more consistently you stay in gratitude and focused on that which is good, the stronger your connection to Source Energy is, and the more quickly and effortlessly you’ll be able to manifest that which is unseen into your reality.

If you have ever felt like you’re hitting a wall or things aren’t going your way, shift your mindset to gratitude and I promise you will see changes.

You are a Badass Review – Action Items

Fortunately these days, most personal development books aren’t just fluff and instead include things you can actually do today to implement what they suggest. You are a Badass is no exception.

“In order to kick ass, you must first lift up your foot.” – Jen Sincero

You can’t just want to be different, you have to take action. That’s exactly what Jen was referring to in her quote about lifting up your foot. And once you make the decision to take action that decision has to be for real. She highlights that “So often, we pretend we’ve made a decision, when what we’ve really done is signed up to try until it gets too uncomfortable.

There is also an entire chapter on money (which she later evolves into another book that I’m listening to this month). One key piece from this chapter that may force you to go back to your subconscious beliefs from the first section is that the “First rule of wealth consciousness: come from a place of abundance, not lack.” This is something drilled into me from another book: “A Happy Pocket Full of Money“. If you have had problems with your relationship with money this is an excellent book to choose as well.

You are a Badass Review – Summary

To summarize, this is really one of my favorite personal development books. If you are sensitive about language, or plan to listen with small children in the car, then this book is probably not for you. Otherwise, I would definitely recommend you checking it out with an open mind. For sure there will be parts that will not resonate with you, but take the parts that do and incorporate them into your life.

You are a Badass Review
Not kidding about the language here. I personally loved it but it’s not for everyone.
