If you’re like me, checking out the weather of destinations is critical to my trip planning. If you are headed to see the Northern Lights, you are likely curious about the Abisko weather in December. I visited Sweden for the first time at the end December 2019/beginning of January 2020 with the intent of hopefully seeing the northern lights.

Before and after my trip to northern Sweden however, I spent some time in Stockholm doing some sightseeing as well. If you are doing the same, click here to check out the weather in Stockholm in December. Although I currently live in Salt Lake City, UT, one of the most important questions for me before this trip was what is the weather like in Abisko, Sweden in December.

More about the Abisko Weather in December

According to Google, the average high temperature in Abisko, Sweden in December is 25°F/ -4°C and the average low in December is 11°F/ -12°C . Keep in mind that the sun does not rise at this time of the year. However, this does not mean it is completely dark either. In December there is an average of 4 hours of twilight. Think of it like how the sky looks just after the sun has set.

When thinking about how to dress for your time in Abisko, Sweden, the most important thing is to consider layers. The best go-to fabrics are wool and down to help stay warm. I wore a wool baselayer top and leggings under all of my outfits. If you don’t currently have any wool items, know that these require some additional care when considered from a laundry perspective, however the hassle and price are totally worth the warmth you will feel. Additionally, a jacket that covers to mid-thigh or lower will help retain additional body heat.  Other important items to pack are a hat, gloves, wool socks, and boots.
