My first time in Sweden was a month and a half ago. This was at the end December 2019/beginning of January 2020 with the intent of hopefully seeing the northern lights. Before and after my trip to northern Sweden however, I spent some time in Stockholm doing some sightseeing as well. Although I currently live in Salt Lake City, UT, one of the most important questions for me before this trip was what is the Stockholm weather in January?
Stockholm Weather in January
According to Google, the average high temperature in Stockholm in January is 33° F/ 1° C and the average low in January is 26° F/ -3° C. Keep in mind that there is also a limited amount of daylight in Stockholm at this time of the year. In January there is an average of 6 hours of daylight. The sun never really gets overhead and it basically looks like a sunset for the majority of the time that the sun is up.
When thinking about how to dress for your time in Stockholm, Sweden, the most important thing is to consider layers. The best go-to fabrics are wool and down to help stay warm. I wore a wool baselayer top and leggings under all of my outfits. If you don’t currently have any wool items, know that these require some additional care when considered from a laundry perspective, however the hassle and price are totally worth the warmth you will feel. Additionally, a jacket that covers to mid-thigh or lower will help retain additional body heat. Other important items to pack are a hat, gloves, wool socks, and boots.
